Outreach Program
Jr Science & Astronomy is growing!
This year, we can deliver planetarium-type programs & hands-on activities to schools in Cache Valley and the surrounding areas. Please
contact Laura Swift Lind for more information or to schedule a visit to your
school.
Astronomy Programs
For the astronomy programs, we will bring a laptop with Stellarium to give a presentation aligned with the UT State Core for each grade. For now,
we will need the school to provide a projector; this can be just a regular computer projector such as many classrooms already have. The
presentations can be done in the classroom, library, computer lab, gym, or another room depending on your school's facilities and the size of
group you would like each presentation to be given to. Each presentation is approximately half an hour to 45 minutes.
| Example Presentation Topics |
| 1st & 2nd Grades | Introduction to Classical & Native American Star Stories |
| 3rd Grade | Planets & Moons |
| 4th Grade | Navajo Sky |
| 6th Grade | 1) Introduction to Astronomy
2) Constellations & Scale |
| 7th Grade | Classification of Stars & Planets |
| 8th Grade | Gravity & Nuclear Energy |
| Earth Science, Physics, or Astronomy | 1) Introduction to the Night Sky,
2) Introduction to Astronomy,
3) Using Stellarium |
Hands-On Activities (Modules)
Some of these activities are based on the old Jr Engineering modules, and other are new. There will be more as time goes on, and we welcome
any suggestions for activities or how to get the materials. The current modules are: Hydraulic Robots, Germatics Puppets, Water Chimes, and
Swimming Upstream.
Cost
In order to continue this program from year to year, and to grow it, we are asking that schools that would like us to come visit pay a small
stipend. The suggested donation for schools in Cache Valley is $50 for a day-long visit (6+ presentations). We recommend talking to the PTA
or your schools sponsoring businesses (if you have such) to raise the funds. If for some reason, your school is unable to raise the funds, we
will still come as it is a suggested donation. For schools outside of Cache Valley, we would need travel funds as well, which can be negotiated
on a school-by-school basis.
